The Skinny on Buying a Baby Crib

The Skinny on Buying a Baby Crib

There are many joys to welcoming a new baby into your home: the infectious laughter, the wide curious eyes drinking it all in; funny faces and gummy smiles; teeny toes and explorative little hands. Yes babies truly are little miracles…when they aren’t causing sleepless, howling nights, producing wretchedly foul diapers or pulling hair and poking eyes. And if America’s Funniest Home Video’s has taught us anything, they tend to execute many a frequent and powerful fist, t-ball bat or kick ball to the groin.

So why not try to eliminate all of your superfluous stress while you can by adequately preparing for the arrival of baby. The first thing you should do is order a crib. It’s important to know and understand all of the criteria for buying a crib and familiarize yourself with your own special needs. So take a minute and read through this easy to follow prep list; help to ease some of your pre-stress before the real stress begins:

The Skinny on Baby Cribs

First things first, your baby will probably be spending the majority of his or her time in the crib. Almost two thirds of their fresh little lives are spent sleeping, or at least trying to. Being a baby takes up a lot of energy. Learning and adjusting to a brand new world can make someone very sleeping so it’s important to have a safe and comfortable place to retire to.

It’s important that the slats on your crib are close enough together that your baby won’t be able to finagle his or her big, round head between them. It’s also very important not to put a crib near or next to a window, especially one with blinds or drapery. It’s possible for babies to strangle themselves with the cords on blinds or drapes, and there have been some tragic incidences where babies have pushed themselves through loose screens on windows. If the dimensions of a room prevent you from being able to avoid a crib near drapes or a window, a good way of eliminating the danger is using a clothes pin to gather up and cinch the cords at the top or cutting the cord in half, so that instead of a loop, you have two straight lines.

Finally, it’s a good idea to buy a crib that has adjustable railings so that you will be able to pick up your baby with ease. Many cribs today are made with railings that lower on both sides and even have storage drawers beneath the crib, for added convenience.

The Skinny on Safety

There are some crucial regulations that you should know before purchasing a crib; measurements and safety regulations that you should be sure to arm yourself with before you take on the daunting task of picking out a crib:

• The space between crib slats should be absolutely no more than 2 and 3/8 inches

• The drop sides must be, at the very least, 9 inches above the mattress support when in the lowered position

• When in the raised position, the top of the drop side must be at least 26 inches above the mattress support at its lowest position

• The standard crib size mattress (51 ¾ inches long by 27 ¾ inches wide) should fit snugly within the crib frame; if you can fit two fingers between the mattress and the frame than the mattress is too small and there is a chance that your baby could become dangerously stuck in this space

The Skinny on Everything Else

There is a little controversy surrounding whether or not baby bumpers (those soft pads that line the inside of a crib) are actually safe to have in a crib with your baby. They were originally considered a safety feature, preventing babies from being able to slip their heads between the rails and other dangers, however recently a growing number of organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics have deemed them unsafe, and a hazard to your child’s safety.

Also, any crib made before 1973, in other words, any crib made before a rigid set of safety standards were solidified for baby cribs, are more likely to malfunction and pose a threat to your baby. Some organizations suggest that you try to avoid second hand cribs in general as used cribs are apparently the cause of over 50 infant deaths per year.

Finally, try to avoid decorative detail on cribs. Protruding pieces can break off and create choking hazards; as well, cut out designs along the side of the crib have been known to trap babies arms and legs causing physical injury.

So there you have it; an excellent jumping point from which to begin your search for the perfect crib. Make sure you visit the American Academy of Pediatrics website for a complete list of regulations and safety tips from the experts as well as the Consumer Product Safety Commission to get the lowdown on all of the brands you have been looking into.

The Safety Of Crib Baby Bumpers And Baby Crib Furniture

A very common safety concern when parents consider how to set up their baby crib furniture bedding is whether or not to use crib baby bumpers.

When it comes to this style of bedding for baby crib furniture, a 2005 study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding crib baby bumpers found that over 20 years, from 1985 to 2005, twenty-seven children aged one month to two years suffocated or were strangled by crib baby bumper pads or bumper pad ties. Aside from deaths, the study also found that there were a total of twenty-five injuries caused by bumpers or their ties.

What the study doesn't make clear are the circumstances of those injuries or deaths caused by crib baby bumpers, and whether they might have been related to how the child was positioned for sleep, their general strength or whether they suffered from underlying medical conditions. Considering that twenty seven deaths over twenty years indicates one or two incidents a year, the possibility that other factors could have been involved in these cases is strong.

Most parents today now understand that there are many safety concerns regarding older baby crib furniture, such as slots that are too large and might allow the baby's head to slip through, resulting in serious injury or death. However, when it comes to finding bedding for baby crib furniture, the safety concerns of the "professionals" sometimes seem a bit overboard. Newer baby crib furniture is manufactured with ultimate safety in mind, with slots that are now too small for a baby's head to pass through.

The study, which analyzed three U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission databases for deaths related to crib bumper and crib-related injuries from 1985 to 2005, found that 27 children from 1 month to 2 years old died from suffocation or strangulation related to bumper pads or their ties. The study also found 25 nonfatal injuries attributed to bumpers. Crib baby bumpers also come in styles that have certain features with safety in mind as well. Most have ties that are on the outside of the crib that get tied onto the baby crib furniture post, and the only case where you wouldn't want to use a crib baby bumper is where the child is so frail and weak that they can not even roll themselves around inside the crib. New parents have enough to worry about, and crib baby bumper safety should not be one.

The site also had a crib set that was hot pink, black & white with poodles. It had a white chenille poodle pillow. My daughter-in-law is looking for hot pink, black and lime green bedding for the nursery-Can you help us find an affordable set or place to have it custom made???

Here's a website that has a lot of cute stuff. I hope you can find something that you like.

Can’t fit mobile on convertible crib- Any sugesstions?

I got this convertible crib for baby: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5640155

I bought the Baby Looney bedding set and matching mobile for this crib. I cannot fit the mobile on the back or the sides of the crib. I don't want to fit the mobile on wall as I will be moving crib sometimes. The only place I can fit mobile is in the front rail which drops to pick up baby. That's seems weird to me if I fit it over there because I will be using the drop rail alot.

What do you think I can do? Are there any other mobiles which can fit these types of cribs?

It does seem weird to put it on the front rail, but that's what we did, too. I had a similar problem with my crib not fitting a mobile right. The mobile we ended up with was a Tiny Love Symphony-in-Motion, which attaches between the vertical slats rather than attaching over a horizontal rail.

A safe Baby Crib

A safe Baby Crib

The priority, when you are buying your baby’s crib is safety. Your baby will be spending quite a lot of time in the crib at this point in their lives. So, with this in mind, what are the considerations to take into account? The safest option is buying a new crib, instead of a hand me down or a second hand crib. This is because over time wear and tear can make the crib less solid and therefore less safe, also you do not know fully the history of a used crib. Used cribs might have been damaged at some point and repaired but it is still less structurally sound even if it has been repaired. Also, if the crib was made before 1974 it would not have had to meet safety standards that were introduced at this point, and while they might have a nice retro look and might have been expensive when bought, they are not a safe choice. After all the best baby cribs are safe baby cribs.

So, if you choose to purchase a new baby crib there are some other things to note. The more simply designed cribs are the best. This is because cribs with decorative cut out designs can pose a possible hazard for a baby to catch their finger in or also a possible foothold for them to climb out of the crib. The crib should also feel very sturdy and secure if you test the sides or other areas of it.

Another important note is buying your mattress, it is best to buy a crib that comes with a mattress that is designed for that specific crib as it is not safe to have a mattress that does not fit the crib properly. Also, the less loose fitting blankets and sheets that are used in the crib the better, as there is a risk of the baby being suffocated. Pillows are an item that should not be used for baby’s cribs as they too can pose a risk.

Drop sides are a very useful feature in cribs as they allow us to lift in our take out our bay with ease. If you are self-assembling your baby’s crib you should make sure that these drop sides have been fitted properly and lock easily into place. Once they are in place it should take an appropriate amount of force to lower them, different cribs use different methods for lowering the drop side and you can pick one that you feel is best.

If you purchase a crib with an adjustable base it will make the crib last longer as you can lower the base as they start to grow. Babies and toddler can be surprisingly quick at learning to climb so take note as they get taller of their height in relation to the crib side rail.

Are Round Baby Cribs Any Better than a Standard Crib

If, like me, you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary in your new babys' nursery, round baby cribs may be just what you are looking for. These relatively new style of cribs are manufactured to be hard-wearing and somewhat charming.

Most are beautifully made of solid wood and are as safe as, if not, safer than the standard rectangular cribs that we are all used to seeing in most babies rooms. Obviously, as the crib is rounded, there are no sharp corners or joints to worry about where your baby could hurt themselves

Round baby cribs also offer your baby a clear view of his or her surroundings in every direction. It is also easier for you to see your baby too, as there are no solid panels to obstruct your baby from your view.

As the cribs are round in shape, they also save alot of space over the traditionally shaped crib and are easily positioned anywhere in a room. A new mom could locate the crib in the middle of the room if she is still a little uncomfortable after giving birth or maybe recovering from a Cesarean section, as with a round crib there are no awkward angles or corners that you need to negotiate to reach for your baby

There are a growing number of round baby cribs available that you can add canopies and panel inserts too. It is also possible to buy them with designs that will compliment your planned or existing nursery décor.

The majority of cribs are approximately forty-six inches in diameter and many internet retailers will include the round mattress and some even include the bedding, an item that was quite difficult to locate in the past, but as these cribs become increasingly popular many retailers, either stock or will order this type of bedding for your round crib, online retails usually offer a better service in this department.

Bedding comes in a wide variety of themes, which include, sports themes, star themes, animal themes, princess themes, and nautical themes to name just a few. You are almost certainly sure to find at least one that you will love for your new member to the family.

Many of the cribs have hand painted themes and are beautifully decorated on the outside, which for me, add to the overall charm of this type of crib, and some retailers offer bespoke and personal designs of your choice.

There are a few points you need to take into consideration before you buy any crib for your baby, and these are more to do with the finish than the construction of the crib.

Check that the wood has a non-toxic finish, as some paints, plastic and wood finishes, use a chemical called, formaldehyde, in the manufacturing process, which some regard as toxic, especially for a new born baby. For the same reason it is also a good idea to make the same checks for the crib mattress.

Another obvious check, and something that I frequently forget to include, when looking for your crib is, not just the cost of the crib but also the shipping costs. Some retailers offer free shipping, for example others don't, but have very cheap prices with high shipping prices, so always check out the shipping policy and don't forget to check the all important returns policy, it could save you from a real headache if anything were to go wrong with your order or delivery.

Bio
For me, round baby cribs offer a charming and appealing look to any nursery, whether it be in a traditional or more modern design.
